Larry Goodman

Former Owner, Goodman Beverage Co., Inc.

Larry is the retired former joint owner of Goodman Beverage Company in Lorain and Mid-Ohio Wines in Norwalk, a wine and beer distributing business. Larry started with the family business after college in 1978 and increased his responsibilities over the years, from Wine Sales Manager at Goodman Beverage, to General Sales Manager, then Vice-President, General Manager. In 1989, the family purchased Mid-Ohio Wines, Inc. and Larry became President. By the time the companies were sold, they were the largest independent wine distributors between Toledo, Cleveland, and Columbus, as well as one of the largest independent beer distributors. Heidelberg Distributing purchased the businesses in 2008.

Larry has been involved in nonprofit governance since 1987 when he was appointed to the Foundation Board at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain. In 1990 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees at St. Joe’s and was intimately involved with the merger negotiations resulting in the creation of Community Health Partners Hospital and Health Center, which ultimately became Mercy Hospital. In his role as Board Member, Larry led the Quality Committee and was a member of the Audit, Finance, Strategic Planning, Nominating and Executive committees.  He served as both Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Board at the Health System. He retired from the Board in 2007.

In 2000, Larry was appointed to the Foundation Board at Lorain County Community College. During his 16 years of service at the Foundation Board, Larry was involved in improving the endowment of the college scholarship funds. Serving as Vice Chair of the Finance Committee, he participated in a very successful Capital Campaign and fundraising events that succeeded in driving the LCCC Foundation’s endowment fund to one of the highest valued funds for a community college in the country. Larry was an early-on participant in the formation of the Innovation Fund at LCCC, engaged as a committee member since inception determining A and B grants for the various startup applicants. This experience has proven to be invaluable in understanding and appreciating the space occupied by JumpStart in the venture capital universe.

In March of 2010, Larry was appointed to the District Board of Lorain County Community College. During his six-year tenure on the Board, Larry served as Vice Chair in 2012, and Chairman in 2013-2014. He was an avid cheerleader and diligent worker in the support and passing of two levy ballot issues in 2010 and 2013. He also most recently Chaired the Presidential Search Committee which succeeded in recommending three excellent candidates to replace the retiring President, resulting in the hiring of Dr. Marcia Ballinger as President. He served as a consummate champion for advancing Lorain County through the expanded role of its community college. He was involved in enhanced educational opportunities including the growth of Early College High School, the creation of MyUniversity Guarantee, and the access to LCCC programs and resources for all citizens through the creation of outreach centers such as the North Ridgeville Campus. Larry championed economic and workforce development through the support of GLIDE, the Fab Lab, and the Desich SMART Center. Larry retired from the Board on June 30, 2016, as the new President was successfully transitioned.

Larry earned a BS-BA from Boston University in 1976, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He lives with his wife Stephanie in Avon and has three grown daughters and one grandson.
