LIFT Polymers Lightweighting Certificate
Course Duration: One and a half days of training.
Course Dates: March 12-13, 2018
Course Times: 9 a.m. to 5p.m. (March 12); 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (March 13)

Polymers Lightweighting Learning Objectives:

• Understand Practical Uses of Various Polymer Characterizations Methods and the Structure-Property Relationships as applies to lightweighting

• Learn to Diagnose and Solve Practical Problems in Polymer Synthesis, Characterization, Mechanical Properties and Processing as applies to lightweighting

• Gain Breadth of Knowledge of Polymer Science, Polymer Synthesis to Properties and Polymer Processing as applies to lightweighting

• Gain insights into practical problems in lightweighting through case studies analysis with our Polymer Experts.

• Gain Awareness of Cutting-edge Trends in Polymer Design and Applications as applies to lightweighting

Polymers Lightweighting Targeted Audience:
Incumbent workforce participants from industry and government with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline. An initial interest survey of topics in lightweighting polymers will be provided to the course participants to assess level of preparedness.

Course Length:
One and a half days with a focus on pedagogy on day one and half day of case study applications with hands-on work. Day one will include an optional “happy hour” for participants to network with the faculty and prepare for the case studies on day two

Polymers Lightweighting Class Format:
The course participants will have access to an invitation-only Wiki page for the class with interactive feedback with faculty and the group. The wiki page will have continuous content added.

Additive Manufacturing Lightweighting Learning Objectives:

• Understand Practical Uses of Additive Manufacturing (AM) as applies to Lightweighting

• Learn to Diagnose and Solve Practical Problems Using AM (as applies to Lightweighting

• Gain Breadth of Knowledge of AM as applies to Lightweighting in various industries

• Gain insights into practical problems in Lightweighting through case studies analysis with our AM Experts.

• Gain Awareness of Cutting-edge Trends in AM and Applications in Lightweighting

Learning Takeaways:

• Educate on AM concepts for Lightweighting

• Fundamentals of AM of polymers, metals, and ceramics, along with emerging markets and complex architectures

• Understand operating principles, capabilities and limitations of state-of-the-art AM methods (e.g. laser melting, fused deposition modeling, stereolithography, and jetting)

• Build familiarity with complete workflow of AM, including computational design tools, file formats, toolpath generation, scanning and microstructure characterization

• Understand key design rules for parts made by AM Lightweighting Materials and contrast with conventional manufacturing methods such as machining and molding in terms of rate, quality, cost and flexibility

• Understanding AM lightweighting applications use by Markets: Automotive and Aerospace

• Place AM in the context of the evolving manufacturing infrastructure, including advances in robotics, software, logistics and digitization of data

• Understanding the importance of soft skills and team work

Additive Manufacturing Lightweighting Targeted Audience:
Incumbent workforce participants from industry and government with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline. An initial interest survey of topics and guidelines for self-selection in AM lightweighting will be provided to the course participants to assess level of preparedness.

Participants in Target Audience include:
Business Leadership, Product Developer, Engineering Manager, Biomedical Engineers, Non-Metallurgists, Space Communications Scientists, Material Scientists, Product Research and End Users. The curriculum suits both beginners and experts in AM and emphasizes both breadth and rigor. Note: This course has limited enrollment. Please apply early to guarantee your spot.

Additive Manufacturing Lightweighting Course Length:
Two days with a focus on pedagogy on day one and interactive work on the second day with case study applications including hands-on work and practical applications, including lab tours.

AM Course Benefits:

• Technically sound lectures including: AM process fundamentals, material properties, design rules, qualification methods, cost and value analysis, and industrial and consumer applications o AM. Specific emphasis will be placed on design principles and part performance.
