Are you an urban planner, information scientist, or social change agent in the nonprofit or civic sector? Over the course of 3 days you will improve skills in data analysis, accessing local resources, and visualization tools focusing on land policy and mapping data. You will hear from GIS mapping experts from the county, learn about innovative local data tools, and receive hands-on training in data analysis tools. All workshops will be held at the MidTown Tech Hive (6815 Euclid Ave).
Day 1: Tuesday, May 15:
9:00 AM to 12:00 PM- Thinking like a Data Scientist
Learn what exactly data analysis is, who can benefit from learning data analysis, examples of real-world contexts and applications, tools and tips for analyzing and communicating data, and how to design and answer data-driven questions.
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM- Local Data/ GIS Mapping Tools with Dan Giersz
Learn about the various GIS resources maintained and provided by the Cuyahoga County GIS Department including the new MyPlace Real Property application with the most up-to-date parcel information, the Cuyahoga Open Data Portal, public web services available through ArcGIS Online, and the fully interactive GIS Web Mapping Application you can use to make professional quality maps, and download results.
Day 2: Wednesday, May 16:
9:00 AM to 2:30 PM- Excel for Data Analysis with Adam Hecktman
Excel is a tool that most people are familiar with, and many people use every day. Excel can be leveraged to unlock the value of open data of all kinds, and it is particularly well-suited to query and visualize open government data from multiple sources. Learn how to access, transform, cleanse, query, and visualize data using tools that are easy to learn and easy to use.
Day 3: Thursday, May 17:
9:00 AM to 2:30 PM- Data Visualization in Tableau with Joshua Terchek
This module introduces participants to the basics of Tableau. Specific topics include the different versions of Tableau, connecting to data, types of data, basic visualizations, worksheets, and tips and tricks. By the end of this course, participants will be able to make basic interactive visualizations.
