Biomedical companies in Northeast Ohio are raising more venture capital than they have since 2007.

For investors looking to go off the beaten track to find quality deals, Ohio might be the answer. According to the most recent Ohio Venture Capital Report, venture capital activity in Ohio was up more than 80 percent in 2010, surpassing the national average, which was up only 20 percent.

An annual JumpStart survey indicates that tech startup companies that receive assistance from mentors, advisors and investors make a significant contribution to the region’s economy, even in the early stages.

The Cleveland Foundation’s board of directors signed off on $19.9 million in grants supporting local nonprofit organizations, including $2.2 million to support groups charged with attracting new businesses to the region.

Goldman Sachs announced last week that it will bring its 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) initiative to Cleveland. The way Todd Federman sees it, SoMoLend is like a sharp dating site for small businesses. Federman, executive director of a Cleveland investment fund that recently sunk $250,000 into the Cincinnati-based website, is convinced SoMoLend has a recipe for filling a big gap in financing for emerging and existing small companies.

Speakers unveiled a new effort, modeled on a program started in Cleveland, in which private sector and foundation money is raised to help start up companies get to a point where they are self-sustaining.
