Any entrepreneur looking to grow their business is always thinking (or should be) about how to improve their investor pitch. Once you have an opportunity to get in front of an investor, you want to do everything you can to make your pitch successful. I offered some tips I've learned during my years coaching entrepreneurs in my post, ‘Things NOT to Do When Presenting to Potential Investors'. Last week, a fellow blogger, Timothy Hay posted ‘Entrepreneurs' Most Common Mistakes When Pitching VCs', offering some great builds on the ideas I'd shared.

Recently I was asked to give a presentation at a local Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting on ‘What is happening in entrepreneurial development in Northeast Ohio?'. The topic made me think about what initiatives are ‘getting it done', and some of the key organizations taking part in the transformation. With the list of such organizations being so long, this will be the first post of a series (‘Getting It Done'), taking the key points of my presentation and bringing them to life in my blog.

Need a Job? Here's How to Get One at an Entrepreneurial Company

Thursday, August 20, 2009

You might have read my blog post from a few weeks ago, about the JumpStart TechLift Advisors' panel discussion directed toward current college students and recent grads, entitled "Starting Your Career at an Entrepreneurial Technology Company". The event featured CEOs from two small, entrepreneurial companies, Ron Zieske of Heat Seal, and Andy Sherman of Powdermet/Mesocoat, along with Megan Mealy, head of college recruiting at Rosetta. The panel was rounded out by three recent grads who are now working in entrepreneurial environments: Jeff Bargiel (Case Western) who is in business development at PhyCal, Liz Mather (Stevens Institute of Technology), a Product Manager at US Endoscopy, and Leslie Matt (University of Akron) who is a Marketing Coordinator at Knotice. Halley Marsh of NOCHE moderated the panel.

Everyone knows that we are in tough economic times right now. Perhaps no group is feeling this more than college students -- particularly recent graduates or those anticipating graduation in the next few years. News reports consistently say that 2009 has shaped up to be the worst job market for new grads in years. On the other hand, a recent NorTech report said that high technology is one of the very few sectors in Northeast Ohio that is adding jobs. It is common knowledge that job growth acr...

Everyone is aware that this is a tough economic year, and that job prospects for new college graduates are not great. This has severely affected student internships, which provide not only short term talent for companies, but also important work experience for students, a long term talent pipeline for companies and vitality for our region. These issues and opportunities are particularly key to the continued entrepreneurial development of Northeast Ohio. A number of programs, three of which JumpStart TechLift Advisors either manages or promotes, are driving student internships into our entrepreneurial companies and organizations:

Recently, I was asked to give a talk to a group about JumpStart TechLift Advisors, JumpStart, and the support network for entrepreneurial companies in Northeast Ohio. In preparing, I took a look at where we have been, and where we are today in terms of a fabric of funding and support resources for entrepreneurial companies. Wouldn't it be great if you could achieve all of the above in a single action? I know...I know...the "free money" thing first got your attention, but we can all agree that these are all important and good things. So, how do you do it? By using the various subsidized internship programs that are available to entrepreneurial technology companies in Northeast Ohio, that's how.

Things NOT to Do When Presenting to Potential Investors

Monday, February 09, 2009

I have coached a number of entrepreneurs during my time at JumpStart and TechLift, and presented to a number of investors while raising venture capital for my company during the worst venture funding climate ever (yes, much worse than today!). From those experiences, it has become apparent to me what most investors do and don't want to see in the presentation about a potential investment.
